Supporting the COP27 Presidency
In Cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education, and the Centre of Excellence for Research and Applied Studies on Climate Change and Sustainable Development (C3SD-NRC), CEDARE provided support and technical assistance to the Egyptian Presidency of the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC to organise the Science Day Presidency Events at the COP, in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. To complement the official consultation process, and to enhance understanding about the role of science in underpinning climate policy and talking climate change impacts, the Science Day will shed light on how scientific knowledge and evidence-based climate research can provide understanding and solutions to the potential vulnerabilities to and risks of climate change. CEDARE proposed session outlines including speakers and partners, and assisted in organising the sessions.

Relevance to SDGs
The organization of the four Science Day sessions at COP27 supports SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By convening key discussions on accelerating climate action informed by science, uniting global research efforts, harmonizing environmental assessments, and building Africa’s climate resilience, the sessions directly contribute to climate change mitigation, adaptation and impacts research collaboration. The sessions also foster multi-stakeholder partnerships across governments, academia, civil society and the private sector to strengthen the science-policy interface on climate action. Overall, by facilitating high-level exchanges between climate scientists and policymakers, the Science Day outcomes help drive evidence-based decision making and collaborative action on the climate crisis, in line with SDG 13 and SDG 17.
