Development of the Centre of Excellence for Research and Applied Studies on Climate Change and Sustainable Development – National Research Centre (C3SD-NRC) in Egypt

CEDARE assisted the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the National Research Centre in the development of the Centre of Excellence for Research and Applied Studies on Climate Change and Sustainable Development – National Research Centre (C3SD-NRC) in Egypt.

CEDARE is a founding member of the board of the C3SD-NRC and its Steering Committee, along with a distinguished group of national, regional, and international bodies working on addressing climate change as well as its environmental, social, and economic impacts.

The Centre is one of the newest centres of excellence at the National Research Centre. It was established in cooperation with the International COMSTECH organization and the Chinese Institute of Climate Change. The C3SD-NRC plays a vital role in establishing research-based methodologies for addressing climate change and its impacts, and in developing sustainable solutions for vulnerable areas in Egypt and the region. It also provides technical and scientific support to decision makers in the governmental and nongovernmental sectors to bridge the science-policy gap.

The Centre’s Board of Directors includes various national, regional and international entities whose efforts are harmonized to work on mitigating climate change and its various impacts on the environment, social and economic issues. The Centre adopts a comprehensive strategic vision on the path to reducing the social and economic impacts of extreme climatic phenomena affecting public health and the environment. This is to support national and regional efforts in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals at all levels.

Objectives

• Enhance national and regional capabilities to take appropriate measures to address climate change issues in a way that reduces its environmental, economic and social impacts, in line with the requirements of sustainable development.
• Be a national, regional and international centre for sharing and exchanging knowledge and information related to climate change.
• Provide sustainable research solutions to manage and mitigate potential impacts of climate change with partners and leading knowledge institutions.

• Support institutions responsible for climate change activities to integrate and complement various efforts and activities at the national and regional levels.
• Integrate data and enable information sharing by implementing a national, regional and international climate change database.
• Develop and integrate regional and international climate models and produce seasonal, annual and decadal forecasts.
• Develop climate forecast scenarios based on national data for all sectors, by creating a central database.
• Provide technical support for climate change projects and help secure joint funding.
• Technical support for climate change policies.
• Coordination between different sectors and between different climate change related activities in adaptation, mitigation and crossover issues.
• Assistance and support for technical capacity building on climate change issues locally and regionally through various training programs.
