Technical Capacity to African Countries on Remote Sensing Application and Environmental Data Visualization

This capacity-building process, organized by the United Nations Environment Programme Africa Office in collaboration with George Mason University, aims to equip participants with knowledge and skills in remote sensing applications and environmental data visualization. The emphasis is on enhancing the understanding of environmental change detection and its relevance for developing effective policies in response to climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

Region / Country

Africa

Objectives

The primary aim is to build the capacity for new and emerging technology for environmental change detection and its applications for policy support in developing African countries. The capacity-building process is part of a larger capacity-building programme aimed at improving data availability on the three planetary crises: climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, to enhance policy formulation.

Timeline

From – To     2022 – 2023

Outcomes

Improved understanding and capability among participants for applying remote sensing and environmental data visualization techniques, increased availability and use of data on key environmental crises in policy formulation, and stronger inter-institutional relationships between African institutions and global educational and policy entities.

Training material on Remote Sensing Applications and Environmental Data Visualization

Relevance to SDGs

The training aligns with multiple United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It directly supports Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land) by enhancing the understanding and use of data related to climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. It also contributes to Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by fostering capacity building and international cooperation. By improving the capacity to detect environmental changes and visualize data, the project aids in formulating policies that can lead to more sustainable practices, thereby contributing to Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production)
