(2021-2022), This agreement contributes to UNEP’s Climate Change Sub-programme 2020-2021 including Expected Accomplishment: (B) “To strengthen the ability of countries to move towards climate-resilient and low emission pathways for sustainable development and human well-being” and Output 3: “Tools and approaches designed and piloted in countries that allow them to develop mitigation plans, policies, measures and low-emission development strategies, and to spur investment and innovation within selected sectors in a manner that can be monitored, reported and verified”. The agreement also contributes to UNEP’s Chemicals, Waste and Air Quality Sub-programme 2020-2021 including  Expected Accomplishment: (C) “National emissions sources identified, policies, legal, regulatory, fiscal and institutional frameworks and mechanisms for the reduction of air pollution developed, institutional capacity built for improved air quality, and air quality assessments done by countries with UNEP support” and Output 3 “Advisory and support services and capacity building to facilitate the standard and strategy development and information sharing necessary to reduce air pollution”. UNEP intends to partner with the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) due to their inherent research and technical experience on sustainable transportation issues and close linkages to relevant government institutions in Arab countries. UNEP has worked with CEDARE in the development of regional fuel quality roadmap for the League of Arab States (LAS) and organized a regional Fuel Quality Meeting for the League of Arab States in Cairo. CEDARE has also supported several countries in promoting fuel economy in Bahrain, Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco. Activities in this SSFA build upon the foundation of the work and network in the Middle East and West Asia (MEWA) region by CEDARE through the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV) and the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) over the past years.
