The Impacts of Single-Use Plastic Pollution on the Marine Ecosystem
On June 29th, 2024, The Ministry of Environment and CEDARE co-organized an #awareness session of the harms caused by #single_use#plastic_pollution and its effects on #biodiversity in #Egypt and the resulting threat to human health, marine life, birds, etc., and the damage made to the #environment and disruption to the #ecosystem and fisheries, and consequently the #tourism sector and the #economy at large.
The interactive session addressed the topic of plastic pollution using an all-new way through presentations, short films, interactive edutainment activities, and questions and answers to deliver the requires information. Speakers pointed out the efforts of the authorities, and specifically the Ministry of Environment to address this critical issue, specially in Alexandria. They mainly stressed the importance of the monitoring and evaluation, activating the #WasteManagementLaw No. 202 of 2020, providing incentives, and the inclusion of #sustainableconsumptionandproduction in the State’s policies. Participants varied from several departments at the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, academia from Al-Azhar University, Damietta University, Helwan University, Lakes and Fisheries Protection and Development Authority, General Authority for Remote Sensing, to NGOs concerned with preserving marine life and biodiversity.
This workshop comes within the framework of SwitchMed program (Policy Component), jointly implemented in Egypt by the وزارة البيئة المصرية – Ministry of Environment, #CEDARE, the UN Environment Programme and funded by the European Union.
