CEDARE in Africa Clean Mobility Week

Electric Vehicles, cleaner fuels, trade policies and non-motorized transport, have been among the many topics of the African Clean Mobility Week, held in mid-March 2018 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Among the highlights of the event were the numerous case studies about how different countries are phasing out aging vehicles and restricting imports on used vehicles while developing policies to introduce electric vehicles, ranging from heavy duty vehicles such as trucks and buses, to cars, and to two- and three-wheelers.

Energy and Environment Expert of CEDARE, Ahmed El-Dorghamy, presented the case study of policy development in Egypt including an overview of CEDARE’s study on verage fuel economy of light duty vehicles in Egypt as well as the overview of the state of play of electric vehicles deployment in Egypt.

Among key advices given by CEDARE is to improve data availability and prepare baseline studies to objectively identify national priorities in order to prepare for the various available opportunities for support for climate action and vehicle fleet renewal, such as the Green Climate Fund, the upcoming Global Environment Facility Electric Mobility Program, as well as other sources of support available from the international development organizations and leading players in the private sector who are welcoming win-win opportunities for cooperation.

Throughout interventions, CEDARE’s program coordinator for Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) projects, Ghada Moghny, also shared experiences in stimulating and developing the recycling sector in Egypt. Notably, g the recycling industry and promoting Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) are both necessary in all clean mobility discussions in almost all African countries, especially that there is very little preparation for the end-of-life vehicles and their components, whether Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles or electric vehicles and batteries.
