CEDARE continues to play a key role in enhancing global water monitoring and governance!
On February 25, 2025, Dr. Khaled AbuZeid, Regional Water Resources Director at the Cedare – Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe, participated in the 9th Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) meeting of the UN-Water Integrated Monitoring Initiative (IMI-SDG6) at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) headquarters in Geneva.
Dr. AbuZeid brought valuable insights from the Arab region and Europe, emphasizing the need for accurate indicators to assess progress on SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. He highlighted the importance of integrated water resources management, cross-sectoral collaboration, and data-driven policymaking to ensure sustainable water governance.
Key discussions at the meeting included:
• Enhancing data availability and analysis of cross-sectoral linkages.
• Strengthening global outreach strategies using SDG 6 indicators.
• Exploring the integration of water issues into non-water sectors.
• Assessing financial investments needed to achieve SDG 6 and post-2030 goals.
Dr. AbuZeid also stressed the need for region-specific indicators, particularly for arid regions like the Arab region, referencing insights from the Arab State of the Water report by CEDARE. He called for stronger regional collaboration, leveraging platforms like the Arab Water Forum and the Environment and Development Forum to disseminate progress updates and challenges.
Through its active engagement, CEDARE reaffirms its commitment to advancing effective water governance, sustainable development, and evidence-based monitoring mechanisms.
