SRI Steering Committee holds its Second Meeting in Cairo
In the framework of the Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) project, the second steering committee meeting was held on the 27th of September, 2016 at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) premises.
Chaired by the Director of the IT infrastructure Sector, MCIT, the meeting was attended by all members including CEDARE’s Project Management Unit, representatives of the Ministry of Finance, representatives of Ministry of Trade and Industry, representatives of Ministry of Environment, and from the Swiss side; representatives of Sofies Institute, the Swiss Federation of materials Science and Technology Laboratories, and the Swiss embassy in Cairo.
According to the set agenda, the meeting reviewed the activities carried out during the preceding six months in order to assess the current status of the implementation plan, and the level of fulfillment of the recommendations of the first SC meeting. The meeting also identified the insight of local experts about potential small and medium enterprises in the field of e-waste recycling in Egypt. In addition, a survey about incubators contributing to the capacity building and training component was presented. Members also discussed the project’s Advisory Committee, its formation, and the needed resolutions.
Being one of the exemplifications of the Swiss-Egyptian partnerships, the SRI project aims to introduce sustainable e-waste recycling industries to Egypt through the provision of legal, administrative and technical support such as capacity building and training. The integration and participation of small and medium enterprises in the recycling of electronic waste, governance and safe management of non-renewable resources is the main deliverable. It further creates job opportunities and increases local competencies of both the formal and informal sectors in order to achieve sustainability in the recycling process.
