CEDARE, FEI & WMRA explore Egypt’s Circular & Green Economy Opportunities under the SRI Project
On 9 December 2024, Generating “Opportunities of Circular & Green Economy” came under the spotlight as a pivotal mechanism for promoting sustainability. The meeting was co-organized by Cedare – Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe, the Environmental Compliance Office and Sustainable Development (ECO-FEI) at the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI) and the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA), under the umbrella of the Swiss Sustainable Recycling Industries Project (SRI) in Egypt.
More than 70 key players from the government, private sector recyclers, industry-related stakeholders and manufacturers, and financial institutions shared thoughts on prospect growth as far as circular business is concerned with special emphasis on the recycling industry and waste management sector.
Meeting addressed the Recycling & Waste Management Investment Opportunities in light of the collaboration between the State of Egypt and the Swiss government under SRI.
Throughout the sessions, the Swiss model of e-waste Extended Producer’s Responsibility (EPR) system as well as the financing mechanism were overviewed. In addition, a feasibility study of problematic fractions such as lithium batterries and hazardous plastic waste was also presented.
In addition, panelists showcased different sectors’ best practices and successful green financing models in the Egyptian market. The event served to synergize the multifaceted aspects of circular economy actors.
The SRI Egypt Project is implemented by CEDARE’s Sustainable Growth Programme (SGP) in collaboration with the وزارة الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات-مصر – وزارة البيئة المصرية – Ministry of Environment, the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), World Resources Forum (WRF), DSS+ and Empa – Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology from the Swiss side, and aims to transfer the Swiss solid know-how in sustainable e-waste management to Egypt and other countries.
