Sustainable Transport in Egypt STE 2019 – “Cleaner Fuels for Cleaner Air”
Throughout June 18-19, 2019, the Sustainable Transport in Egypt (STE 2019) international seminar was held in Cairo with the theme of Cleaner Fuels for Cleaner Air. It was co-organized by the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) with the Ministry of Environment of Egypt, UN Environment and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), and in cooperation with the Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC), and the African Refiners & Distributors Association (ARA).
The event aimed to catalyze experience exchange and foster partnerships to advance cleaner fuels in Egypt with focus on the priority issue of Diesel fuel due to its disproportionately high Sulfur content. It is identified as a priority in addressing air pollution and climate change mitigation measures in Egypt. The event also served as the last round of stakeholder consultations for a policy brief being prepared to inform and advise policy makers about the status of Diesel fuel in Egypt and recommendations for the way forward in the refining industry to clearly communicate the voice of authorities responsible for public health and environment.
