League of Arab States Meeting on Sulphur Reduction Roadmap
On December 4th, 2016, UN Environment Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) in cooperation with Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) held a networking event for the members of the League of Arab States Joint Committee for Environment and Development in the Arab Region (JCEDAR) in Cairo. The event, was held in a friendly dinner setting, also gathered experts in the field who are interested in promotion of cleaner fuels and improved air quality.
The key items highlighted throughout the event were as follows:
- The Air Quality mandate of UN and activities in the transport sector, in particular to promote low Sulphur-reduction in fuels as well as other pollutants and greenhouse gases.
- A reminder of the PCFV campaign as well as the necessary tandem work in vehicle efficiency and air pollution and climate change (the GFEI campaign and CCAC), with reference to a brochure distributed about PCFV.
- Call for action: Participants were reminded about the need to adopt the LAS Sulphur reduction strategy at a national level, whereas the PCFV network is available for such support through CEDARE and UN Environment.
- A brief handout with a summary of key messages of the League of Arab States strategy report for reduction of Sulphur in fuels (LAS fuel quality roadmap) was distributed.
