Effective Management of Wadi El-Rayan and Lake Qarun Protected Areas in Egypt Project
(2022), The project aimed to improve the management of Wadi El Rayan and Qarun reserves in Egypt by addressing key threats to these protected areas. To support this, a strategic communication plan was developed to enhance conservation efforts, promote sustainable development, restore the protected areas (PAs), and improve the quality of life for Fayoum’s citizens. It was funded by The Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UN Environment and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in partnership with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA). the project delivered several key outputs, including a Lake Qarun Ecosystem Restoration Study, a Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) strategy for Fayoum’s PAs, and a study on Nature-based Solutions in Egypt. These efforts resulted in strengthened communication support for conservation initiatives, an action plan that guided the selection of key implementation sites, the establishment of a network linking Fayoum’s PAs with relevant partners, and a thorough needs assessment to identify
challenges facing the protected areas and inform future actions.
