Riyadh Named Capital of Arab Environment

In a landmark recognition, Riyadh has been officially designated as the Capital of Arab Environment, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. This prestigious title acknowledges the city’s significant efforts in advancing green initiatives and promoting ecological balance across the Arab region.
Riyadh has become the Arab Environment Capital for two years, after 10 cities competed to obtain this title, which was the result of the 35th session of the Council of Arab Ministers for Environmental Affairs, which was held in Jeddah, west of the Kingdom. Meanwhile, the “Saudi Green Initiative” was able to obtain the award for the distinguished environmental project at the government sector level.
Choosing Riyadh as the Arab Environment Capital will serve as a hub for environmental innovation, knowledge exchange and cooperation between Arab countries. Riyadh has made remarkable strides in areas such as renewable energy, waste management, urban greening and water conservation. The recognition as the Capital of Arab Environment aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader environmental goals under Vision 2030, reinforcing the Kingdom’s leadership in addressing global environmental challenges. Riyadh’s designation also reflects the collective aspiration of Arab countries to prioritize sustainability and environmental resilience.

The Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, H.E. Eng. Abdulrahman A. Al Fadley, said that the Kingdom adopts a comprehensive vision for environmental systems in accordance with its ambitious Vision 2030, and is keen to achieve its goals by adopting and implementing national strategies and plans in the field of environmental protection, reducing land degradation, preserving vegetation cover, enhancing biodiversity, achieving food and water security, and launching national, regional and international initiatives to reduce land degradation and preserve terrestrial habitats, which were launched during the Kingdom’s presidency of the G20 in 2020.
Throughout the year, Riyadh will host a series of events, workshops, and conferences to foster regional dialogue and action on key environmental issues. The focus will include climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable urban planning, and capacity building for future generations.
